For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

Romans 8:15–16
  • Understanding “Abba”: “Abba” is a term of endearment used by children in Israel, expressing deep love and trust.
  • The Gift of Sonship: Through Jesus, we receive the “Spirit of sonship,” enabling us to call God “Abba” and experience an intimate relationship with Him.
  • Security and Protection: Calling God “Abba” evokes the image of a child nestled safely in their father’s arms, symbolizing the security and protection He offers.
  • Overcoming Fear: By seeing God as our Abba, we can overcome fear and anxiety, replacing them with peace and trust.
  • Experiencing Unconditional Love: God’s love for us is unconditional, and by embracing Him as our Abba, we can experience this love fully.

Today, I want to share a beautiful truth that can transform your relationship with God: the power of calling Him “Abba Father.”

What Does “Abba” Mean?

Have you ever imagined the heartwarming scene of children in Israel? Picture them running with joyful shouts, calling “Abba! Abba!” as they leap into their dads’ arms. In Hebrew, “Abba” isn’t just any word for “father” – it’s the most intimate term a child uses. It’s a word brimming with trust, love, and complete dependence on their dads.

The Bible, in Romans 8:15, tells us that through Jesus, we receive the incredible gift of the “Spirit of sonship.” This amazing gift allows us to cry out to God in the same tender way – as “Abba, Father!” Isn’t it remarkable that the Holy Spirit chose to leave this Aramaic word untranslated? It beautifully emphasizes the intimate, personal connection we can have with our Heavenly Father!

Finding Security in Your Abba’s Arms

Imagine a young child nestled safely in their father’s strong embrace. No matter the danger lurking outside, they feel completely secure and protected in their father’s arms. This is the very picture God wants us to have when we call Him “Abba.” It’s a powerful image that speaks volumes about the unwavering love and protection He offers us.

More Than Just a Word

Of course, titles like “Daddy” or “Papa” might feel more natural for some. The key takeaway isn’t the specific word, but rather the understanding it represents: seeing God as a loving, caring Father who wants an intimate relationship with you. Without this understanding, fear and anxiety can easily take hold. Romans 8:15 talks about a “spirit of bondage again to fear.” This refers to the perspective found in some parts of the Old Testament, where God was seen as a distant judge, inspiring fear rather than love.

But God Doesn’t Want You to Fear Him!

He yearns for you to experience the liberating “Spirit of sonship!” Many believers, unfortunately, carry a sense of being fatherless, leading them to live in fear, guilt, and constant worry. The antidote? A healthy dose of God’s incredible love!

“Daddy!” – A Simple Yet Powerful Cry

Think about your own children for a moment. When your child wakes up from a scary nightmare, what’s their first instinct? They don’t offer lengthy, eloquent prayers. They simply cry out “Daddy!” because they know their Dad will be there in a heartbeat. God wants the same from us!

In moments of weakness, forget about crafting perfect prayers. Just cry out, “Daddy!” Run to Him with complete faith, knowing that He embraces and loves you exactly as you are, in all your imperfections.

Your Heavenly Father is Waiting

Make some time today to come to your Abba Father. Believe in His unconditional love for you, a love that knows no bounds. See Him welcoming you with open arms, a radiant smile on His face. Run into His embrace, and let His love wash away all your worries, fears, and insecurities. When you truly believe and receive your Father’s love, it will bring unshakeable peace and strength into your heart, transforming every aspect of your life.
