So David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?”
2 Samuel 5:19, NKJV

Today’s scripture comes from 2 Samuel 5:19 and 1 Chronicles 14:8, and it tells the story of David, a mighty warrior who had just ascended the throne as king over all Israel. Imagine the pressure! Here he was, a man who’d slain giants and conquered countless foes. Wouldn’t it be easy for him to get a little cocky, thinking, “Bring on the Philistines, I’ve got this!”?
But that’s not what David did. The verse tells us, “when the Philistines heard that David had been made king over all Israel, they went up to meet David in battle.” This is where David’s incredible humility shines through.

Instead of charging in blindly fueled by past victories, the Bible tells us David sought God’s guidance. He didn’t rely on his own strength or past accomplishments. We can imagine him stopping, taking a deep breath, and offering a prayer something like, “God, what should I do? I don’t want to go into battle unless You’re with me.”
This is a powerful lesson for all of us. Sometimes, when we face challenges, we might just assume God’s on our side and charge ahead, fueled by our own determination. But David shows us a wiser approach. He recognized that his true strength, his favor, and his ability all came from God. He didn’t rely on his own impressive resume; he sought God’s direction for this new situation.

Here are some questions we can ask ourselves, just like David did:
- “God, what do You want me to do with this opposition?” Is there a challenge you’re facing right now? Maybe a difficult decision at work, a conflict in a relationship, or a personal struggle. Take a moment to pray and ask God what He wants for you in this situation.
- “Shall I attack, or shall I be still and let You fight for me?” Sometimes, the best course of action is to be patient and trust in God’s timing. He might be working things out behind the scenes, even when we can’t see it. Perhaps the most strategic move is to hold our ground and wait for His leading.
- “If I go in, will You give me the victory?” Even when we take the right steps, things don’t always go according to our plan. But by seeking God’s guidance, we can find peace regardless of the outcome. Victory might look different than we expect, but trusting in Him allows us to find strength and acceptance in any situation.

Let’s all learn from David’s example. Don’t face your battles alone. Seek God’s wisdom and trust in His plan, even when it’s hard. Remember, He’s always with you, guiding you through every victory and every challenge.
