Philippians 3:9
Friends, brothers and sisters in Christ, let’s delve into a truth that has the power to transform our lives, a truth that echoes through the very fabric of our being: the grace of God. It’s a phrase we hear often, but do we truly grasp its depth, its profound significance?
We speak of grace as the unearned, undeserved, and unmerited favor of God. It’s not something we can strive for, attain through our own efforts, or buy with good deeds. It’s a gift, pure and simple, a divine outpouring of love that transcends our human understanding. Consider this: when you find yourself in the pit of despair, when you’ve reached the very bottom of your own resources, and when you feel utterly unworthy, that’s precisely when God’s grace shines through. That moment, when He answers your cry, when He reaches down and lifts you up, that’s the tangible manifestation of His amazing, unmerited favor.
Think about it. In our darkest hours, when the shadows of doubt and fear threaten to overwhelm us, His light pierces through, illuminating the path forward. We become recipients, not by our own merit, but by His boundless love. And when we experience this grace, this unmerited favor, it naturally overflows. A recipient of such profound love cannot help but extend that same grace to others, becoming a conduit of His compassion in a world that desperately needs it.
My friends, let’s be honest. In and of ourselves, we deserve nothing good. We are imperfect, flawed, and prone to straying from the path He has set before us. Yet, because we are in Christ, clothed in His righteousness, we are granted access to a realm of blessings beyond our wildest imaginations. God doesn’t withhold His goodness from us; He pours it out generously. Our part is not to struggle in our own strength, to rely on our own flawed efforts, but to surrender to Him, to receive all that He so freely offers.
I believe, with all my heart, that the more we become conscious of His righteousness, the more we experience His unmerited favor. It’s a shift in perspective, a transformation of the mind. The world will try to disqualify us, to remind us of our shortcomings, to whisper accusations in our ears. But in those moments, we must turn to Jesus, the One who qualifies us, the One who speaks words of affirmation and love. That, my friends, is the true fight of faith.
The fight of faith is not a battle against flesh and blood, but a struggle to believe, to cling to the truth that we are made righteous by faith, not by works. The Apostle Paul, a man who knew the law intimately, who had achieved great things in his own right, declared that he considered all his accomplishments as “rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith” (Philippians 3:8–9).
Paul’s words reveal a profound truth: there are two types of righteousness. One is a self-righteousness, built on our own efforts, our attempts to earn God’s favor through obedience to the law. The other is a gift, a righteousness that comes from faith in Jesus Christ, a righteousness that is not based on our performance but on His perfect sacrifice.
Only one of these foundations is secure, unshakable. Self-righteousness is built on the shifting sands of our own abilities, our own flawed attempts to keep the law. It can only offer fleeting moments of confidence, dependent on how well we perceive ourselves to have done. But the righteousness of Christ is built on the Rock of Ages, Jesus Himself. It offers unwavering confidence, constant access to His unmerited favor, even when we feel utterly undeserving.
When the storms of life rage, when the waves of doubt threaten to engulf us, what will we depend on? Our own wavering righteousness, or the perfect, rock-solid righteousness of Jesus? It is our faith in His righteousness that grants us the right to God’s unmerited favor.
Today, because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross, we can expect good things to happen to us. We can dare to ask God for big things, to reach out and grasp the blessed destiny He has prepared for us and our families. His righteousness is our right to His unmerited favor! Don’t let any voice of accusation, any whisper of doubt, tell you otherwise.
Let us embrace this truth, let it permeate our hearts and minds, and let it transform the way we live. Let us walk in the confidence of His righteousness, knowing that we are loved, accepted, and empowered by His grace.
