“Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.”

Acts 13:38–39

Let’s delve into this beautiful passage from Acts, a story that resonates so deeply with the heart of the Gospel. It’s a story that illuminates how the power of God’s grace, through faith in Jesus, transcends the limitations of human effort. We find ourselves in Lystra, where Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, speaks words that pierce the very soul of a man crippled from birth.

Now, it’s fascinating, isn’t it? Paul doesn’t lay hands on this man in the traditional sense, as we might expect. There’s no elaborate ritual, no physical touch that precedes the healing. Instead, the man’s healing originates from something far more profound: the seed of faith planted by the very words of the Gospel. He heard, he believed, and then, in obedience to Paul’s simple command, he stood.

Think about that for a moment. This man, who had never walked, found the strength to rise because he heard and believed. It’s a testament to the sheer power of the spoken Word, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. While we don’t have the specific words Paul spoke to this man, we are given a glimpse into the heart of his preaching in Acts 13:16-41. And within that sermon, we find a truth that sets the foundation for all that follows: the forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus.

Here’s the crux of it, the very heart of the Good News: “everyone who believes” receives forgiveness. No qualifications, no prerequisites, just simple, unwavering belief. This is a radical departure from the old covenant, which was built on the foundation of works, on human effort to obey the law. It was a system where forgiveness was earned, where righteousness was measured by obedience.

But the new covenant, the covenant of grace, flips that paradigm entirely. The burden is no longer on us, on our ability to perform, but on Christ, on His perfect sacrifice. He bore our sins, He paid the price, and He offers forgiveness freely to all who believe. It’s a gift, a divine exchange where our unworthiness is met with His infinite worthiness.

And this, my friends, is the heart of the Gospel. It’s the good news that sets us free from the shackles of striving, from the endless pursuit of perfection. It’s the assurance that we are justified, declared righteous, not by our own merit, but by the merit of Christ.

Think of the implications! This isn’t just a theological concept; it’s a living, breathing reality that transforms lives. We’ve witnessed it time and again in our gatherings, in our church services. As the Gospel of grace is proclaimed, as the finished work of Jesus is lifted up, healing miracles break forth. Physical healing, emotional healing, spiritual healing—all flowing from the wellspring of faith in Jesus.

And it’s not confined to the walls of our churches. My friend Marcel Gaasenbeek’s story is a beautiful illustration of this truth. He was on his way to Romania, listening to a sermon, when a friend in the backseat, suffering from chronic back pain, heard a simple, yet powerful declaration: “Jesus has already healed you, and the devil is the one giving you lying symptoms in your body.”

In that moment, amidst the monotony of a long drive, something shifted. The friend, through the haze of sleep, heard the truth, believed it, and declared “Amen!” in his heart. And instantly, the pain vanished. The power of God flowed through him, bringing complete and utter healing.

This, my brothers and sisters, is the power of hearing and hearing the Gospel of Jesus. Faith comes by hearing, and the more we immerse ourselves in the Word, the more we open ourselves to the transformative power of God’s grace. It’s like watering a seed; the more we nourish it with truth, the more it grows and flourishes.

When we truly grasp the magnitude of Jesus’ finished work, when we understand that He has already paid the price for our healing, our deliverance, our wholeness, then we begin to receive an impartation of faith that can move mountains. Even in the face of seemingly impossible situations, we can stand firm on the bedrock of God’s promises.

The Gospel isn’t just a story; it’s a living reality that continues to unfold in our lives. It’s a power that heals, restores, and transforms. It’s a message that sets us free from the burdens of the past and propels us into the fullness of God’s purpose.

In our everyday lives, in our struggles, in our joys, in our doubts, let us remember the power of the Gospel. Let us remember that Jesus has already done the work, that He has already paid the price. And let us, like the crippled man in Lystra, respond with faith, with obedience, and with an unwavering belief in His power to heal and to restore.
