Matthew 12:35

Oh, friends, it truly warms my heart to share a reflection that’s been stirring within me for quite some time. For over two decades, I’ve been blessed beyond measure to walk alongside some truly remarkable individuals, each with a story that’s etched into the tapestry of my own journey. I’ve had the immense privilege of meeting folks in our own little corner of the world, within our congregation, and then, through the gracious opportunities presented, at conferences and gatherings across the globe.

And then, there are the countless souls I’ve connected with through the written word – letters and emails, each a window into a heart, a life, a struggle, and sometimes, a triumph. These stories, they aren’t just anecdotes; they’re echoes of the human experience, a testament to the power of hope and the potential for transformation.

I’ve witnessed, firsthand, the incredible power of faith in action. Stories of liberation – from the suffocating grip of anxiety and depression, from years of torment that seemed inescapable. Imagine, if you will, the joy of someone who finally breaks free from the chains they’ve carried for so long. Then, there are the stories of rescue, of being pulled from the depths of fear, a fear so profound it felt like a prison. And the victories over destructive habits and addictions, those moments of breaking through, of finding strength where there seemed to be none. These are the moments that remind us of the boundless grace and mercy available to us.

But, and it pains me to say this, for every story of breakthrough, I know of countless others who are still navigating the storms of life. They’re still battling severe insecurities, feeling trapped by disorders that seem to define them, and living under the constant shadow of fear. They’ve sought solutions, they’ve tried every avenue they can think of, yet they find themselves still desperately yearning for freedom, for a way out of their emotional and sometimes, physical prisons.

This brings us to a question that has weighed heavily on my heart: What is the difference? What allowed some to experience that liberating breakthrough, while others remain trapped in their struggles? It’s a question that deserves deep reflection, and I believe the answer, while seemingly simple, holds profound truth.

It boils down to belief. What we believe, deep within the core of our being, shapes our reality. It’s the foundation upon which we build our lives, our choices, and our experiences. Think about it. If we hold onto wrong beliefs, distorted perceptions of ourselves, of God, and of the world around us, we inevitably find ourselves entangled in a web of wrong thoughts. These thoughts, like seeds sown in fertile ground, sprout and grow, producing unhealthy emotions – feelings of guilt, shame, condemnation, and fear. These emotions, in turn, drive us towards toxic feelings and ultimately, wrong behaviors, actions, and even painful addictions.

It’s a downward spiral, a path of defeat that leads us further and further into paralyzing captivity. Wrong believing acts as a kind of internal compass, guiding us down a path that leads away from peace and towards despair. It’s the silent saboteur, the unseen force that keeps us bound, preventing us from experiencing the fullness of life that God intends for us.

But here’s the beautiful truth, the beacon of hope in the midst of darkness: right believing is the key to unlocking the door to freedom. When we choose to align our beliefs with the truth of God’s Word, we set ourselves on a path of right living. It’s a transformative process, a journey of renewal that begins with a single step of faith.

Right believing is not about blind faith or wishful thinking. It’s about grounding ourselves in the unwavering truth of God’s love for us, in the promises He has made, and in the power of His grace to transform our lives. It’s about choosing to see ourselves as He sees us – as beloved children, created in His image, redeemed by His sacrifice, and empowered by His Spirit.

This journey starts with a conscious decision to immerse ourselves in God’s Word, to seek His wisdom, and to meditate on His truths. It’s about discovering and embracing the Savior we have in Christ, understanding what He has already accomplished for us, and allowing His love to permeate every aspect of our being.

Renewing our minds with God’s truths is like planting seeds of hope in the fertile soil of our hearts. It’s about replacing the lies we’ve believed with the truth of who we are in Christ – precious, valued, and deeply loved. It’s a process of transformation that unfolds as we encounter the person of Jesus, as we open our hearts to His presence, and as we allow His love to heal and restore us.

Think of it like this: if you believe you are unlovable, you will act unlovable. If you believe you are unworthy, you will make choices that reflect that belief. However, when you truly grasp the depth of God’s love for you, when you understand that you are His beloved child, you begin to live from a place of confidence, peace, and joy.

This isn’t just theory; it’s a lived reality. It’s the difference between feeling trapped and experiencing true freedom. It’s the difference between living in fear and walking in faith.
