Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

Colossians 2:14–15

Brothers and sisters in Christ,

Isn’t it amazing how we often focus on the physical threats in the world, like nuclear disarmament, while overlooking the spiritual battle raging around us? We worry about earthly weapons, but there’s a far more sinister enemy, one who has already been disarmed! The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6:12 that we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. This passage speaks of a spiritual disarmament, a victory already won by our Lord Jesus Christ. It’s a victory we need to fully grasp and live in.

The passage talks about God disarming “principalities and powers,” referring to Satan and his demonic forces. They’ve been stripped of their ultimate authority over our lives. But the question is, what weapon did they wield before this disarmament? What was their instrument of attack?

The answer lies in the “handwriting of requirements that was against us.” This refers to the Law, the Ten Commandments given by God on Mount Sinai. Now, it’s crucial to understand that the Law itself is holy, just, and good. It’s a reflection of God’s perfect character and a guide for righteous living. The Law wasn’t given to be a tool of oppression, but rather a mirror to reveal our shortcomings. It highlights our human frailty, our inability to perfectly adhere to God’s divine standards. The Law’s purpose, paradoxically, is to point us to our need for a Savior. It shows us our brokenness so we can recognize our desperate need for the healing and redemption found only in Jesus Christ. Think of it like a doctor diagnosing a patient. The diagnosis isn’t meant to condemn the patient, but to identify the problem so that the right treatment can be administered. The Law is the diagnosis, and Jesus is the cure.

The devil, in his cunning and deceptive nature, twisted the purpose of the Law. He didn’t create the Law, but he hijacked it, weaponizing it against us. He used it as a tool of accusation, condemnation, and separation from God. Imagine the weight of the Law, the constant reminder of our failures, our inability to measure up to God’s perfect standard. This is the burden the devil used to keep us feeling guilty, ashamed, and distant from our Creator. He whispers in our ears, “You’re not good enough. You’ve failed again. God can’t love you because you keep breaking the Law.” These are the lies he uses to keep us bound in chains of guilt and despair.

But praise be to God! He didn’t leave us in this hopeless state. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to fulfill the Law on our behalf. Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, lived a life of perfect obedience, fulfilling every requirement of the Law. And then, He took our place on the cross, bearing the weight of our sins, the very “handwriting of requirements” that was against us. The Law, which condemned us, was nailed to the cross with Jesus. This act wasn’t just symbolic; it was a decisive victory over the powers of darkness. Colossians 2:15 tells us that Jesus “disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” What a powerful image! The devil’s weapon, the Law, was rendered powerless against those who are in Christ Jesus.

When Jesus rose from the dead, He conquered sin and death, and He broke the power of the Law to condemn us. Now, through faith in Jesus, we are no longer under the condemnation of the Law, but under the grace of God. This doesn’t mean we can live however we please, disregarding God’s commands. No, true grace empowers us to live a life that is pleasing to God, motivated by love and gratitude for His incredible gift. It’s not about earning God’s favor through perfect obedience, but about responding to His love by striving to live a life that reflects His character.

So, what does this mean for us today? It means that when the enemy comes knocking, reminding us of our past failures, pointing his finger and accusing us with the Law, we can stand firm in the truth of the Gospel. We can look to the cross and say, “Jesus paid the price. He fulfilled the Law on my behalf. Your accusations have no power over me.” We are redeemed, forgiven, and set free!

We must refuse to go back to the old way of living, trying to earn God’s approval through our own efforts. Any teaching that tells us we must keep the Law to be blessed is putting the weapon of condemnation back into the devil’s hands. It’s denying the finished work of Christ on the cross. We are called to rest in the truth of God’s grace, to embrace the freedom that Christ has won for us. The more we understand and believe in this grace, the more we are empowered to overcome our struggles and live a life of victory. This is how we reign with Christ, and when we reign, the devil has no hold on us. He is disarmed!

My friends, this is the heart of the Gospel: not a list of rules and regulations, but a love story. A story of a God who loved us so much that He sent His Son to die for us, to take our place, to bear our shame, and to give us His righteousness. It’s a story of grace, mercy, and unfathomable love.
