In the book of Joshua, the six cities of refuge are listed, seemingly as historical details. Yet when we examine their names, a powerful message about God’s love and care unfolds. These cities were designated as places of asylum, where people could find safety. Let’s look deeper at each name and see how they reflect God’s character.

The first city, Kedesh, means “holy place” or “sanctuary.” This reminds us of how God invites us to seek refuge in Him, a sanctuary set apart from the chaos of life.
Then comes Shechem, which means “shoulder.” Shechem, an ancient meeting place, is where Jesus met the Samaritan woman, offering her living water. It’s also where Joseph was buried. This “shoulder” symbolizes strength and support, reminding us of how Jesus bears our burdens.

Kirjath Arba, later known as Hebron, means “friendship” or “fellowship.” This city was home to the tombs of Abraham and Sarah. Hebron speaks of the intimacy and friendship God offers us, reminding us that in fellowship with Him, we are never alone.
Moving across the Jordan, we find Bezer, which means “fortress.” In God, we find a strong fortress, a place of defense where we are protected and safe.
Then there is Ramoth, meaning “heights” or “highly exalted.” Ramoth reminds us that God raises us up, exalting us above our struggles and giving us a new perspective.
Finally, we come to Golan, which means “rejoicing” or “joy.” God promises us that in Him, our hearts will be lifted and filled with joy, even amid life’s trials.
When we put these names together, an incredible truth emerges: God offers us sanctuary (Kedesh) on His strong shoulders (Shechem). He draws us into fellowship (Hebron), is our fortress (Bezer), and lifts us high (Ramoth) to rejoice with Him (Golan).

Isn’t it wonderful? This picture of Jesus is not just about names in an ancient text but a reminder of His character and His heart for us. He is our refuge, strength, and joy, always there, offering Himself to us.
Beloved, when we feel overwhelmed, when life’s burdens weigh heavily on us, let’s remember that Jesus is our holy place, our safe sanctuary. He calls us to rest on His shoulders, to enjoy His fellowship, and to trust in His protection. So, let’s respond to His love and climb onto His broad shoulders, finding the peace and joy only He can give.
