Fear Not, But Draw Close: A Look at the New Covenant
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Psalm 95:6–7 Today, we’re tackling a topic that can sometimes feel like a tangled mess: the fear of the Lord.

Today, we’re tackling a topic that can sometimes feel like a tangled mess: the fear of the Lord.

I know you’ve likely encountered messages that emphasize fearing God. While reverence and deep respect for Him are essential, I don’t want you living in constant dread!
The Bible paints a beautiful picture – a far cry from a fearful one – of intimacy with God. He longs for closeness, not cowering fear. Think about the imagery used: dwelling in His secret place, being sheltered under His shadow – these evoke a loving relationship where trust and comfort reign supreme. Fear and true intimacy simply cannot coexist.

Here’s the incredible news: because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we have direct access to God’s throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). We can approach Him with boldness, casting aside any shame or fear. This means we can receive His favor, provision, protection, and help whenever we need it.
Now, the Bible does use the word “fear” when referring to God. But it’s crucial to understand the context. In the New Covenant, established through Jesus’ blood, this doesn’t mean being afraid! Jesus himself clarified this when tempted by the devil. He quoted Deuteronomy 6:13, but replaced “fear” with “worship” (Matthew 4:8-10). The fear of the Lord, in the new covenant, is about worshipping Him with awe and reverence, acknowledging His majesty and power while basking in His love.

So, friend, let’s ditch the fear and embrace the transformative power of worship! Follow the inspiring example of Caleb (Numbers 13-14), who boldly followed God despite the anxieties of others. When we worship Jesus, our fears melt away like morning mist. He becomes our shield, our guide, and the source of incredible peace that surpasses all understanding (Psalm 91).
