A Gentle Shepherd, Not a Bone-Breaker: Finding Comfort in God’s Care

Psalm 23:1–3 NLT
Friends, many of you, like me, may have heard a troubling story about shepherds. It goes like this: a shepherd, to keep a wandering lamb close, would break its legs and then care for it. This supposedly creates a bond between them. Let me tell you, that’s simply not true!

Honestly, that image haunted me for years. But then, by God’s grace, I spoke with a real shepherd. His reaction? Pure shock! He explained how cruel such an act would be. A good shepherd protects his flock, guiding them with a gentle hand and a watchful eye, not through inflicting pain.
This story, though untrue, highlights a dangerous misconception. Some might believe God, our shepherd (John 10:11), acts in a similar way. They might fear He “breaks our legs,” causing hardship to keep us close. Perhaps they’ve experienced trials and tribulations and wonder if God is somehow behind them.

But beloved, the truth is far more beautiful! Jesus, our Good Shepherd, doesn’t break anything. Instead, He guides us to peaceful pastures, refreshing waters, and places of healing (Psalm 23:2-3). He renews our strength and provides for all our needs (Philippians 4:19). He doesn’t delight in our suffering; He desires our well-being.

Imagine a loving shepherd, patiently leading his flock through a vast meadow. He knows the terrain, the dangers, and the best spots for rest and nourishment. He doesn’t force his sheep, but gently encourages them to follow the path he has prepared. That’s the image of God we should hold close to our hearts.
