A heart at peace gives life to the body.
Proverbs 14:30 NIV
As I was reflecting on the stresses of modern life, a passage resonated deeply within my spirit, a reminder of the peace that surpasses all understanding. It’s so easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of daily pressures, the anxieties that gnaw at our hearts, and the worries that steal our joy. We find ourselves constantly juggling responsibilities, chasing deadlines, and navigating a world that often feels overwhelming. In the midst of this chaos, it’s vital to pause and ask ourselves a crucial question: “Is my heart troubled?”
This simple question can be a powerful barometer of our spiritual well-being. We live in a world that glorifies busyness, often equating it with success. We’re told to strive, to achieve, to accumulate. But at what cost? So often, the pursuit of worldly success leaves us feeling empty, disconnected, and deeply troubled. We may have climbed the ladder of achievement, only to find that the view from the top is not the promised land of contentment, but rather a landscape of anxiety and unease.

I’ve heard it said that stress is the number one killer in our modern world. And while that statement might seem dramatic, it’s sadly rooted in truth. Medical professionals, including doctors within my own church community, have shared with me the devastating impact of stress on physical health. They can advise patients to modify their diets, to reduce their intake of sodium, sugar, or cholesterol. But the one thing they can’t directly control is the patient’s stress level. It’s a silent killer, a pervasive force that erodes our health from the inside out.
I truly believe that stress is the underlying cause of so many physical ailments we face today. It can manifest in a myriad of ways, from premature aging and skin rashes to gastric problems and even abnormal growths. Stress throws our bodies out of balance, disrupting the delicate harmony of our systems. It weakens our immune systems, making us more susceptible to illness. It robs us of our energy, leaving us feeling depleted and exhausted. In short, stress kills.
Doctors often describe certain physical symptoms as “psychosomatic,” meaning they originate from psychological distress, primarily stress. This connection between our mental and physical well-being is undeniable. When our minds are burdened with worry and anxiety, our bodies suffer the consequences. And this is where the profound truth of Jesus’ words comes into sharp focus. Stress is not from God. Peace is.

Jesus understood the human condition. He knew the anxieties and pressures that we face. That’s why He offered us a gift, a precious inheritance that transcends the turmoil of this world: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27,1 NIV).
It’s important to note that the word “peace” in this verse carries a depth of meaning that is often lost in translation. While the English word “peace” is a good starting point, it doesn’t fully capture the richness of the original language. Jesus, speaking in Aramaic-Hebrew, would have used the word “shalom.”
“Shalom” is a word brimming with significance. It’s a word that resonates with wholeness, completeness, and well-being. It encompasses not only the absence of conflict, but also a deep sense of harmony, tranquility, and contentment. The Brown Driver & Briggs Hebrew Lexicon, a respected resource for understanding the nuances of Hebrew words, defines “shalom” as completeness, safety, soundness (in body), welfare, health, prosperity, peace, quiet, tranquility, contentment, peace used of human relationships, and peace with God, especially in our covenant relationship.
Think about the implications of that definition for a moment. “Shalom” is not just the absence of war; it’s the presence of wholeness in every aspect of our lives. It’s physical health, emotional well-being, spiritual connection, and harmonious relationships. It’s the deep-seated assurance that we are safe, secure, and loved by God.
This is the “shalom” that Jesus offers us, a gift that is freely given to all who believe. It’s His completeness, His safety, His soundness, His welfare, His health, His prosperity, His peace, His quietness, His tranquility, His contentment, His peace in human relationships, and, most importantly, His peace with God through the covenant established at the cross. All of these blessings are part of our inheritance in Christ.
Imagine what it would be like to truly experience this “shalom” in your life. Imagine being free from the weight of regrets, the gnawing grip of anxieties, and the paralyzing fear of the future. Picture yourself vibrant, energetic, and strong, filled with a sense of purpose and peace that transcends the circumstances around you.
This “shalom” is not some distant, unattainable ideal. It’s a present reality for those who are willing to receive it. It’s a gift that Jesus has already given us, a promise that He has already fulfilled. The key is to open our hearts and minds to this gift, to allow it to permeate every area of our lives.
We can begin by acknowledging the areas where we are experiencing a lack of “shalom.” Where are the sources of stress and anxiety in our lives? What are the things that are troubling our hearts? Once we identify these areas, we can bring them before God, asking Him to pour out His “shalom” upon us.
We can also cultivate “shalom” in our lives through prayer, meditation on God’s Word, and fellowship with other believers. By spending time in God’s presence, we can begin to experience the peace that surpasses all understanding. We can also learn to trust in His promises, knowing that He is always with us, even in the midst of the storms of life.
My friends, I encourage you to embrace the “shalom” that Jesus offers. It’s a gift that is available to each and every one of us. It’s a gift that can transform our lives from the inside out. It’s a gift that can bring healing, wholeness, and peace to our troubled hearts.
