Friends, as we gather today, let’s turn our hearts to a powerful story from the Gospel of John. We encounter a man crippled for a staggering thirty-eight years! Imagine the despair, the frustration of being confined for so long. Yet, in that very moment of need, Jesus approaches him and asks a simple question that cuts through years of hopelessness: “Do you want to be healed?” (John 5:6).

The man explains his helplessness – unable to reach the pool’s supposedly healing waters on his own. But then, a miracle unfolds. Jesus utters a powerful command: “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk” (John 5:8). And just like that, the man is healed!
Now, here’s something that might pique your curiosity: Jesus didn’t tell the man to discard his mat. That old, worn-out mat, a symbol of his past struggles, became a beautiful reminder. Why?

1. A Testimony of God’s Power: Imagine the man’s encounter with someone who asks about the mat. It becomes an opportunity to share his incredible story. He can proudly declare, “This isn’t just a mat; it’s a testament to God’s healing touch in my life!” The mat becomes a tangible symbol, a conversation starter, a way to point others towards the incredible power of God.
2. A Beacon of Hope for Others: The mat served as a much more profound purpose than simply a sleeping pad. It became a symbol of God’s ability to heal anyone. Just as Jesus healed him, He could heal others too! The man’s “mat” transformed from a symbol of his limitations to a symbol of hope – a beacon for those who are struggling and need a reminder that God’s love and power extend to everyone.

Friends, God sometimes leaves “mats” from our past – those burdens, struggles, or past hurts. But these aren’t meant to keep us down. They can be powerful reminders of His faithfulness, of how He has brought us through darkness before. Perhaps you have your own “mat,” a reminder of God’s past intervention in your life. Maybe it’s a memory of a difficult time He helped you overcome, or a lingering scar that serves as a constant testament to His healing touch.
Here’s the call to action: Don’t hide your “mat.” Share your story! Let it be a beacon of hope for others who are struggling. Your story, your “mat,” can be a powerful source of encouragement and a reminder that God’s love and power are ever-present.
