Let Go of Your Burdens and Receive God’s Grace
Are you feeling burdened by trying to follow all the rules? Learn how God’s grace can set you free and give you the peace and joy you’ve been searching for.
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.
Mark 2:22
Hello everyone, today in this daily devotion we are going to discuss something that Jesus said that, although it may seem a little odd at first, has a really important lesson for our lives in the modern era. It’s the tale of the ancient wineskins and the new wine.
- The law represents a set of rules that can make us feel trapped and judged.
- Grace is God’s amazing gift of love and acceptance, freely given.
- Trying to mix law and grace will only lead to frustration.
- Resting in God’s grace brings true freedom, peace, and joy.

Now, it’s possible that you’re thinking about elegant leather wineskins, and you would be correct! However, Jesus was actually discussing the distinction between the old covenant of law and the new covenant of grace—two approaches to relate to God.
Think about those ancient wineskins; they were arid, rigid, and not particularly pliable. It bears similarities to the law. It provided us with a set of guidelines to follow, but it did not grant us the ability to adhere to them exactly. It was a system that had the potential to imprison and stigmatize us.
Next, the great gift of God’s grace—the new wine—is revealed. It’s new, vibrant, and brimming with affection. Grace is the understanding that God accepts us based on His immense love for us rather than our actions.
The crucial point is that you cannot fit this magnificent new wine of grace into the antiquated wineskin of the law. You will lose both the wine and the wineskin when the old one bursts. To put it another way, attempting to combine law with grace can only cause irritation and a feeling that one is never good enough.

A prime example is our Malaysian friend Christine. She first experienced the incredible love of God’s grace when she first came to faith. But gradually, she reverted to a “works mentality,” believing that obedience to the law was the only way to gain God’s favor. She was worn out and discouraged by this.
Christine was fortunate to rediscover the liberty of grace. She came to see that we cannot earn God’s love; it is a gift. And what do you know? She suddenly felt all of the happiness and serenity from the beginning!
For all of us, the same holds true. True freedom, pleasure, and serenity are found when we lay ourselves down in God’s grace. We are released from the weight of having to adhere to every regulation on our own.
Therefore, my friends, keep that blend of grace and law from returning. Remember the incredible grace of God, and allow it to change your life as it did Christine’s. Recall that new wine cannot be placed in old wineskins. However, if you accept God’s grace, you’ll live a full life that is brimming with His love!
