Hebrews 6:11–12

Brothers and sisters in Christ, a profound stirring has taken root in my spirit, a compelling word from the Lord for this very season we find ourselves in. That word, resonant and powerful, is “protection.” It’s not a mere concept, but a tangible, divine reality that Jesus, in His infinite love, secured for us through His sacrifice. As I sit here, pen in hand, I feel a holy commission to delve into the depths of Psalm 91, to unpack its treasures, so that you, my cherished readers, can walk in the fullness of God’s divine protection, especially as we navigate these complex and challenging times.

Psalm 91, though a mere sixteen verses, is a wellspring of potent promises, a fortress of truth upon which we can firmly stand. It’s a sanctuary of divine assurance, a testament to God’s unwavering commitment to His children. Yet, how often do we, in the face of adversity—be it sickness, accident, or any form of tribulation—fail to grasp and claim the Lord’s deliverance found within His sacred Word? We falter, we doubt, we allow the waves of circumstance to overwhelm us.

But when, by the grace of God, we do lay hold of His Word, when we anchor our souls in its immutable truths, the enemy trembles. He knows that the Word, once rooted in our hearts, becomes an impenetrable shield, a force that cannot be easily dislodged. And so, he launches his counterattack, swift and cunning. He points to our outward circumstances, to the lingering sickness, the unresolved conflict, the persistent pain, and taunts us with insidious whispers: “Where is your God now? Where is the promised protection of Psalm 91? Look at your reality; it contradicts your faith.”

In that pivotal moment, we stand at a crossroads. We are presented with a stark choice: to retreat from God’s Word, to succumb to the enemy’s lies, or to stand firm in faith, to cling to His promises with unwavering conviction. It is in this crucible of testing that our true allegiance is revealed.

Even as the Lord prompted me to write this reflection on divine protection, He revealed a tender truth: some of you, dear readers, may have previously claimed the promises of Psalm 91, only to feel that they fell short. You may have prayed, believed, and yet, the desired outcome did not materialize. The enemy uses these past experiences to sow seeds of doubt, to erode your confidence in God’s faithfulness.

But I implore you, my beloved, to hold fast to His Word. It is eternal, unshakable, and unwavering. Your past experiences, though painful, do not negate the truth of God’s promises. If you have not yet experienced the full measure of His protection, I believe that as you persevere in faith, as you continue to meditate on His Word, you will increasingly walk in the fullness of His divine protection.

Let us examine the depths of Psalm 91. It begins with a declaration of dwelling in the secret place of the Most High, abiding under the shadow of the Almighty. This isn’t a physical location, but a spiritual posture, a place of intimate communion with God. It signifies a life lived in constant awareness of His presence, a life surrendered to His will.

The psalm continues, revealing God as our refuge and fortress, our God in whom we trust. He promises to deliver us from the snare of the fowler and the deadly pestilence. He will cover us with His feathers, and under His wings, we will find refuge. His faithfulness is our shield and rampart. We need not fear the terror of night nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.1

This is not a mere poetic flourish; it is a declaration of God’s active, vigilant protection. He is not a passive observer, but an active defender, a mighty warrior who fights on our behalf. He promises that a thousand may fall at our side, and ten thousand at our right hand, but it will not come near us. We will merely observe with our eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.

Why? Because we have made the Lord our refuge, the Most High our dwelling place. No harm will overtake us, no disaster will come near our tent. For He will command His angels concerning us, to guard us in all our ways.2 They will lift us up in their hands, so that we will not strike our foot against a stone. We will tread on the lion and the cobra; we will trample the great lion and the serpent.3

This is not a promise of a life free from trials, but a promise of God’s unwavering presence and protection in the midst of them. It is a promise that even in the face of overwhelming odds, we will not be overcome. It is a promise that God will deliver us, that He will honor us, that He will satisfy us with long life and show us His salvation.

The key, my friends, is to abide in Him, to trust in Him, to make Him our refuge. It is to meditate on His Word, to allow it to permeate our hearts and minds, to become the very foundation of our lives. It is to persevere in faith, even when we do not see immediate results.

The enemy will seek to distract you, to discourage you, to lead you astray. He will whisper lies, he will sow doubt, he will paint a picture of hopelessness. But do not be deceived. Cling to the truth of God’s Word. Declare His promises over your life. Stand firm in your faith.

And as you do, you will begin to experience the reality of His protection in ways you never thought possible. You will witness His deliverance, His provision, His faithfulness. You will walk in the fullness of His blessings.

So, I urge you, beloved, do not allow the enemy to steal your inheritance. Do not let doubt rob you of the peace and security that God has so graciously provided. Embrace the promises of Psalm 91, and allow them to transform your life.
