And since it is through God’s kindness, then it is not by their good works. For in that case, God’s grace would not be what it really is—free and undeserved.
Romans 11:6 NLT
Isn’t it wonderful how the Apostle Paul, with his profound understanding of God’s love, so eloquently describes grace as “free and undeserved”? It’s a concept that truly resonates with the core of our Christian walk. When we genuinely grasp the immensity of this free and undeserved favor, this boundless love that God pours upon us, it transforms our entire perspective. It shifts our focus away from striving and performing, and instead, centers it on the transformative power of His love working within us.
Think about it for a moment. When we’re caught up in the cycle of trying to earn God’s favor, we’re constantly measuring ourselves against some perceived standard, always falling short, always feeling inadequate. But when we truly understand grace, we realize that God’s love isn’t conditional. It’s not based on our performance. It’s freely given, a gift beyond measure. And this realization is incredibly liberating. It frees us from the burden of trying to be perfect, because we know that God loves us, imperfections and all.

This understanding of grace isn’t just a passive acceptance, though. It’s an active force that works within us, flushing out the negative thoughts and false beliefs that hold us captive. It’s like a gentle cleansing, purifying our hearts and minds, making space for the true fruits of righteousness to grow. These fruits – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control – aren’t something we manufacture through sheer willpower. They are the natural outflow of a heart that’s been transformed by grace. They are lasting, sustainable, and enduring because they are rooted in the very character of God.
Now, there’s a teaching that’s been circulating, defining grace simply as “divine empowerment.” While it’s true that grace does empower us, defining it merely as empowerment is, I believe, a dangerous oversimplification. It’s like describing a symphony by only talking about the instruments. While the instruments are essential, they don’t capture the beauty and complexity of the music itself. Similarly, empowerment is a result of grace, but it’s not the essence of grace.

The heart of grace lies in God’s undeserved, unmerited, and unearned favor. Think about the times when you feel most undeserving. Perhaps it’s when you’ve made a mistake, when you’ve fallen short of your own expectations, or when you feel like you’ve disappointed God. It’s in those moments, when we are at our lowest, that the true beauty of grace shines through. It’s in those moments that we realize that God’s love isn’t withdrawn when we fail. Instead, it’s extended even more generously. It’s in those moments that we can receive Jesus’ favor, His blessings, His unwavering love, and His perfect acceptance.
When we truly understand and receive grace as this unmerited favor, it doesn’t just empower us. It heals us. It changes us from the inside out. It mends the broken places in our hearts, and it renews our spirits. It gives us a fresh start, a new perspective, and a renewed sense of hope.
The danger of defining grace merely as “divine empowerment” is that it subtly shifts the focus from God’s work to our own. It can lead us to unconsciously believe that grace is something we earn or maintain through our efforts. Instead of seeing grace as God’s initiative, His loving action towards us, we can start to see it as something we need to activate or achieve. It becomes less about what Jesus has already done for us and more about what we must do now that we’ve received this “empowerment.”
Can you see how this subtle shift can completely change our understanding of the Christian life? Instead of resting in the finished work of Christ, we’re back to striving, performing, and trying to measure up. The burden of living the Christian life falls squarely back on our shoulders, and we’re left feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. We’re back to the hamster wheel of trying to earn God’s favor, which is precisely what Jesus came to free us from.
My friends, it’s crucial to remember that our faith should always point us back to Jesus and Jesus alone. It’s all about His work, His doing, His performance, and His boundless love for us. It’s never about us. It’s never about our own efforts or our own achievements. It’s always and only about what He has done for us.
Don’t be misled by teachings that dilute the pristine definition of grace as God’s unmerited favor. Don’t allow yourself to be drawn into the trap of making the Christian life all about you and what you need to do. That’s not grace. Grace is God’s doing, from the very beginning to the very end. It’s His initiative, His love, His power working in our lives.
