Genesis 39:10, VOICE

Hey everyone, fellow travelers on this journey of faith! I was just reflecting on the incredible story of Joseph, and it really got me thinking about how we handle adversity and temptation in our own lives. It’s easy to read his story and think, “Wow, Joseph was an amazing guy,” but I think it’s so much more than that. It’s a story that’s deeply relevant to each and every one of us, no matter where we are on our walk with Christ.

Think about it: Joseph’s brothers, driven by jealousy, threw him into a pit – a dark, terrifying place. Can you imagine the fear, the betrayal, the utter confusion he must have felt? And then, as if that wasn’t enough, they sold him into slavery! Talk about a complete and utter reversal of fortune. He went from being his father’s favored son to a commodity, a piece of property to be bought and sold. It’s enough to make anyone bitter, angry, to lose all faith in humanity, even in God. He had every right to be consumed by negativity. He could have easily succumbed to despair, resentment, and a thirst for revenge. Who could blame him?

But Joseph didn’t. That’s the part that blows me away. Despite the horrific circumstances, he chose a different path. He chose to remain faithful. He chose to keep doing the right thing, even when it seemed like the world had turned against him. How did he do it? That’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it? How did he maintain such a positive attitude in the face of such overwhelming negativity?

Then, we see him in Potiphar’s house. He rises through the ranks, proving his integrity and his skill. Things are looking up, it seems. But then, Potiphar’s wife comes along. She tries to seduce him, putting Joseph in an incredibly precarious position. Think about the temptation he faced. He was far from home, a slave in a foreign land. He could have reasoned, “Nobody would know. I’ve been through so much; I deserve a little something for myself. It’s not like it would hurt anyone.” He could have given in to the pressure, rationalized his actions, and compromised his integrity. After all, who would believe him if he told the truth? He was, in essence, powerless.

But Joseph didn’t compromise. He ran. He chose to flee temptation rather than give in. He understood the importance of remaining faithful to God, even when it was difficult, even when it seemed like there was no way out. He knew that giving in to temptation, even if it seemed like a small thing, would have far-reaching consequences. It would have damaged his relationship with God, his integrity, and his future.

So, where did Joseph get this incredible strength? That’s what I’ve been pondering. It wasn’t just sheer willpower, I believe. It was a deep and abiding faith in God. He knew, even in the darkest moments, that God was with him. He trusted in God’s plan, even when he couldn’t see it. He held onto the promise that God would never leave him or forsake him.

And that’s where the Scripture about God not giving us more than we can handle comes in. It’s not a promise that we’ll never face difficult times. It’s a promise that in those difficult times, God will be with us. He will give us the strength we need to endure. He will provide a way of escape, even when we don’t see one. That “way of escape” isn’t always a literal escape from the situation itself. Sometimes, it’s the strength to endure, the grace to say no, the wisdom to make the right choice. It’s the presence of God in the midst of the storm.

This passage isn’t just about Joseph. It’s about us. We all face temptations. We all go through difficult times. We all have moments when we feel like giving up, when we feel like we can’t take it anymore. But just like Joseph, we can choose to remain faithful. We can choose to do the right thing, even when it’s hard. We can choose to trust in God’s plan, even when we don’t understand it.

The key, I think, is to cultivate that relationship with God. To spend time in prayer, to read His Word, to surround ourselves with other believers who can encourage and support us. It’s about tapping into that “can-do” power that comes from Christ. It’s about recognizing that we are not alone in this journey. God is with us, always.

When we face temptation, we can pray for strength. We can ask God to help us see the way of escape. We can declare, “I can handle this. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I am strong in the Lord.” These aren’t just empty words. They are powerful declarations of faith, affirmations of our trust in God’s promises.

It’s so important to remember that God’s grace is sufficient for us. His power is made perfect in our weakness. We don’t have to rely on our own strength. We can rely on His. And when we do, we can face anything that comes our way, knowing that we are not alone.

I encourage you, my friends, to meditate on Joseph’s story. Think about the challenges he faced, the choices he made, and the faith that sustained him. And then, think about your own life. What challenges are you facing? What temptations are you struggling with? Where do you need God’s strength?
