Tuning In to Jesus: A Guide to Wholeness

My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. Proverbs 4:20–22 Today, I want to talk about something incredibly important:

Proverbs 4:20–22
  1. Faith is a powerful tool. It can help us to overcome obstacles, find hope, and maintain a positive outlook.
  2. Prayer is a powerful way to connect with God. It can help us to express our concerns, seek guidance, and receive comfort.
  3. Reading the Bible can provide inspiration and guidance. It can help us to understand God’s will for our lives and to learn from the experiences of others.
  4. Surrounding ourselves with positive people can also strengthen our faith. These people can offer support, encouragement, and accountability.
  5. Never give up on hope. Even when things seem bleak, there is always hope for the future.

Today, I want to talk about something incredibly important: guarding our hearts and minds.

Imagine your senses as gates – your eyes and ears constantly letting information in. The world throws a lot at us, doesn’t it? News, social media, TV…it can be overwhelming. But the Bible, in Proverbs 4:20-22, tells us to be mindful of these “gates” and what passes through them.

Think of it this way: God desires for us to be filled with His love and truth. He wants our hearts overflowing with His presence. But just like our bodies need healthy food to thrive, our spirits need the right nourishment too.

Here’s the key: Jesus is the ultimate source of nourishment. John 1:14 tells us, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Jesus is God’s Word made real, and by focusing on Him, we open ourselves to His grace and truth.

This isn’t about shutting out the world entirely. Staying informed is important! Maybe you need to follow industry trends or keep up with current events. But there’s a difference between informed and overloaded. A constant barrage of negativity can leave us feeling drained and depleted.

So, how do we tune in to Jesus?

Here are some tips:

  • Spend time in prayer and reflection. Talk to God, listen for His voice. Quiet your mind and create space for Him to speak. Write down your thoughts, anxieties, and joys. Let Him know what’s on your heart.
  • Read the Bible. It’s filled with God’s wisdom and stories of His love. Don’t be intimidated by its size – start with short passages that resonate with you. Explore different genres – psalms for comfort, gospels for inspiration, proverbs for guidance. There’s something for everyone in the Bible.
  • Surround yourself with positive influences. Seek out uplifting music, movies, and friends. We are social creatures, and the company we keep can significantly impact our outlook. Choose to spend time with people who inspire you, uplift you, and encourage your walk with Christ.
  • Practice gratitude. Take time each day to reflect on the blessings in your life, big or small. A grateful heart is a heart open to God’s goodness.
