Seated with Christ: Embracing God’s Grace Over Self-Reliance

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace [unmerited favor] in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:4–7
  • Understanding Our Place with Christ: We are seated with Jesus, resting in His accomplishments rather than our own efforts.
  • The Enemy’s Trap of Self-Condemnation: The devil uses self-focus to lead us away from God’s peace, creating cycles of guilt and self-doubt.
  • Paul’s Realization: Apostle Paul recognized the struggle of self-occupation and found freedom through Jesus.
  • From Self-Conscious to Christ-Conscious: Instead of focusing on our worthiness, we should remember Christ’s perfect worth and what He has done for us.
  • God’s Unwavering Love: Like a child secure in a parent’s love, we are secure in God’s love through Jesus.
  • Turning Our Eyes to Jesus: Our freedom and confidence come from fixing our focus on Him, not on ourselves.

This passage invites us to see our place in God’s grace, where we are “seated” with Christ, resting in His completed work for us. Imagine being seated with Jesus at the Father’s right hand—not by any merit of our own, but solely by His gift of grace. To “sit” in this place of honor means we can let go of striving and self-reliance. Our job is simply to trust, lean on, and receive the endless blessings Jesus has secured for us.

God desires us to adopt this restful position, where our hope, purpose, and success in life come through Jesus, not through our own struggles and accomplishments. But the enemy, the accuser, has a strategy to pull us away from this peace. He does it by turning our gaze inward, pointing out every flaw, failure, and regret, so we become trapped in a loop of self-doubt and condemnation. It’s a centuries-old trick, one that keeps us from the freedom and joy Jesus offers.

Paul understood this struggle. He experienced that spiral of self-condemnation and even cried out in despair, “Who will deliver me?” (Romans 7:24). But Paul didn’t stay there—he found the answer: “I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!” When we stop focusing on our own shortcomings and begin looking at Jesus, we find our freedom.

Rather than asking, “Am I good enough for God?” we can instead ask, “Is Christ good enough?” The answer is always a resounding yes! Under the law, we’re constantly pressured to measure up, but under grace, Jesus takes that weight upon Himself, making us God-conscious instead of self-conscious.

Picture a young child constantly questioning whether they’re pleasing to their parents. Without knowing they’re accepted and loved, they would feel anxious and uncertain. Yet, when that child knows they are deeply loved, they grow up confident and secure. In the same way, God wants us to be secure in His love. He demonstrated that love perfectly by sending Jesus to take on our sins so that we might stand righteous before Him.

Friends, let’s shift our focus from ourselves and fix our eyes on Jesus. Let Him be our anchor, our hope, and our source of confidence. Embrace His grace daily, knowing that your worth is found in Him alone.
