Feeling Defeated by Trying to Earn God’s Favor?
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. Ephesians 2:4–6

Ephesians 2:4–6
Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try, you just can’t quite measure up to God’s expectations? You strive for good works, pray constantly, but blessings seem to elude you.
This passage speaks directly to that struggle. Many believers get discouraged because they believe they need to earn God’s favor through their own efforts. But the truth is, self-effort can actually block you from experiencing the full power of God’s grace!

Grace, Not Performance
Think about it: the greatest miracle of all – salvation through Jesus Christ – is a free gift received by faith, not by our good works. If that’s true for the biggest miracle, then surely it applies to the smaller things too, like healing, provision, or even restored relationships.
The Bible uses the metaphor of “sitting down” to describe a state of rest in God’s finished work. Jesus, after completing his sacrifice on the cross, sat down at the Father’s right hand. This symbolizes the completion of His work for us. The good news is, the scripture tells us we can sit down with Jesus too!

Resting Doesn’t Mean Passivity
This doesn’t mean becoming passive or neglecting things like prayer, studying the Bible, or developing your talents. God’s grace doesn’t promote laziness; it empowers us to labor more effectively for His glory! Remember Paul, a champion of God’s grace? He worked harder than anyone (1 Corinthians 15:10)!
The New Covenant: A Shift in Perspective
The key difference is the foundation of our labor. Under the old system, people worked to earn blessings. In the New Covenant, God blesses us first, out of His grace. This knowledge then fuels our desire to serve Him with joy and abundance. We don’t work to get blessed, we work because we are blessed!

Imagine the Freedom!
Imagine the weight lifted from your shoulders! No longer do you need to strive and strain to please God. Instead, you can approach Him with a heart of confidence, knowing you are already loved and accepted because of Jesus’ sacrifice. This newfound freedom allows you to tap into your full potential, using your gifts and talents to glorify Him and bless others.
Your Invitation to Rest and Receive
Friend, Jesus has already done everything for you on the cross. All you need to do is trust in His perfect work.
Here’s your call to action:
- Open your arms to God’s incredible grace and gift of righteousness.
- Rest in the finished work of Jesus.
- Begin to reign in life through Him.
Stop trying to earn God’s favor. Instead, let the Holy Spirit guide you to receive by His grace. This is the path to true success, wholeness, and a victorious life!
