Romans 5:19
  • God’s love is unconditional: He loves you regardless of your mistakes.
  • Jesus’ sacrifice makes you righteous: His perfect work on the cross covers your sins.
  • Focus on God’s grace: Trust in His power to transform your life.
  • Confess your sins and receive forgiveness: Embrace God’s mercy and cleansing.
  • Believe in your breakthrough: God has a plan for your life, and He will see you through.

Today, we’ll delve into a struggle many of us face: feeling like God’s disappointed when we can’t break free from a bad habit.

The Cycle of Condemnation and Self-Effort (Romans 7:15-25)

The passage begins by acknowledging a common experience. Many of us, like Colton, grew up believing that we please God through good works and obedience. But when we fall short, it can lead to a vicious cycle. We feel condemned and depressed, prompting us to try harder with self-discipline. However, this self-effort often proves insufficient, leaving us feeling even more defeated.

A bridge spanning a chasm, connecting the past with the future, representing the journey of faith.

Freedom Found in Jesus’ Sacrifice (Romans 3:21-26)

The good news arrives through the story of Colton. Fresh out of high school, he discovered a life-changing truth in one of our books: God’s pleasure in us isn’t based on our performance, but on the complete sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus’ perfect life and sacrifice on the cross paid the penalty for our sins, making us forever righteous in God’s eyes.

Receiving Your Breakthrough by Grace (Romans 5:1-2)

This understanding became a turning point for Colton. He began to confess his shortcomings, but also his righteousness “in Christ” – meaning Jesus’ perfect sacrifice already covered his sins. The result? A transformation! Many bad habits faded away, and his academic performance soared. He stopped focusing on himself and his performance, and instead placed his faith in Jesus. As his focus shifted from self-effort to God’s grace, the things holding him back simply fell away.

God’s Unwavering Grace Extends to Every Challenge (Romans 8:1-4)

Colton’s story goes beyond overcoming bad habits. He faced another seemingly impossible obstacle: affording medical school. But as he continued to believe in God and receive His grace through Jesus, he saw doors opening. Obstacles began to disappear, and his tuition was being miraculously paid for. This experience highlights that God’s grace isn’t limited to specific areas of our lives. It’s a constant source of strength and provision, no matter the challenge.

A butterfly emerging from a cocoon, symbolizing transformation and rebirth.

The Takeaway: You Are Securely Loved in Christ (Romans 8:31-39)

Here’s the heart of the message: God sees you as righteous, even when you fail. Your identity is found in Christ, who made you perfect and accepted in His eyes. God doesn’t judge you based on your performance, but on the perfect sacrifice of Jesus. The more you believe and receive this truth, the more you will be empowered to overcome challenges and receive your own breakthroughs, just like Colton!
