When Jesus visited their home, Mary chose to sit at His feet, soaking in His teachings. Meanwhile, Martha, the older sister, was busy preparing food and ensuring everything was perfect for their guest—Jesus himself. While Martha was caught up in serving Jesus with her actions, Mary was captivated by His presence, cherishing every word He spoke and finding peace in His company. One sister busied herself with serving; the other focused on receiving.

As time passed, Martha’s anxiety over her tasks boiled over, and she vented to Jesus: “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” (Luke 10:40). In her frustration, Martha blamed both Jesus and Mary. Listen closely to Jesus’ response: “Martha, Martha,” He gently chided, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).

What is this one essential thing? Is it to stay busy serving the Lord or to fret over many things? No, it’s to sit at Jesus’ feet and focus your heart, mind, and soul on Him. One sister saw Jesus as someone needing her practical service; the other recognized Him as the divine incarnate, the source of all spiritual nourishment. Which sister truly honored Jesus as the Son of God? Mary did. Martha momentarily forgot that this same Jesus had multiplied loaves and fish to feed thousands; He didn’t come to be served but to serve!

Is it practical to simply focus on Jesus? Absolutely. Later, in John’s Gospel, Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume, preparing Him for burial (John 12:3–8). On resurrection morning, other women brought ointment to anoint His body, but Mary had already honored Him at the perfect time. By focusing on what mattered most—Jesus Himself—Mary ended up doing the right thing at the right time, and everything she touched was abundantly blessed!

In our busy lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the urgent and lose sight of the essential. Like Mary, let’s choose to prioritize sitting at Jesus’ feet, seeking His presence and wisdom above all else. When we make Jesus the center of our lives, everything falls into place.
